Choosing Bedroom Color Schemes: Where to Start

Our bedrooms hold a special place in our hearts. It is the place where we rest after a long day, and when it comes to decoration, perhaps where we most lay bare our personality.

For that reason, choosing bedroom color schemes are often the most complicated aspect of redecorating. Imagine having to wake up every morning to a room that you feel like you made a mistake in!

We don’t want that to happen to you, so we have put together some of the most important pointers to keep in mind when choosing paint colors for bedrooms and more. If you want to make sure you don’t live with eternal regret, keep on reading!

Don’t Think of Your Bedroom in Isolation

Have you recently bought or rented a home where you walk into one of the rooms and thought “What were they thinking here?” More often than not, the reason is the stark contrast in the color scheme from one room to the next.

Yet, even though you may be determined to not do the same thing, it is a trap that you can easily fall into. This is because once you decide on bringing the paintbrushes out, it is so easy to let your creative juices flow in each room. But if you don’t rein it in and have an overall view, you will end up with bedroom color schemes that are not connected to your home as a whole.

Are we saying that you need to use the same color palettes for the whole house? Not at all! But when choosing your bedroom colors the first step is to make sure that your color scheme complements the rooms leading to it.

Get Inspired

So it’s clear that to make sure your bedroom stands out, you need to choose a color that matches your home in general. But which colors do you choose?

Instead of looking through pages of different shades of the same color, a more fun and cohesive way of deciding on a color is by looking for inspiration.

This can come in many forms. Is there a particular piece of art that you would love to have hanging in your room? What about a rug? Or perhaps you love the finish of a certain fabric that could add texture to what should be your sanctuary?

Whatever it is, when you expand your mind to focus on what you love rather than colors it allows you to hone in on the color schemes for bedrooms that will work best for you. As a general rule, you want your wall color to provide 60 percent of your room’s dominant character, then 30 to be given by a secondary color, and 10 for any accents. Choosing something you love as inspiration can cut down half your work by extracting those colors from it.

Bedroom Color Schemes 101

Did you know that colors can speak?

While they don’t use words, the effect color has to transmit a feeling or message is something that humans have used for centuries, from flags and advertising to home decor.

With that in mind, it pays to be conscious of what mood you want your bedroom colors to put you in. As an example the traditional understanding has been:

  • Red: Passionate and exciting
  • Blue: Calm, soothing, and intelligent
  • Yellow: Happy and optimistic
  • Green: Fresh and safe
  • Orange: Energetic and creative

So take a moment to think about what you want to feel when you step into your bedroom. Afterward, everything else, from decorations to your bed (which you can find out more info on here) should be much easier to choose.

Get Your Decisions Right the First Time

Although personal tastes vary, the principles of how to choose bedroom color schemes can be applied no matter who you are. We hope that run down has gone some way in helping you make things just that little bit easier!
